Beware, some web sites and retail stores in the US would like their customers to believe that Yerba Mate is a rare herb found only in the jungles of South America by native Indians. The fact is that yerba mate is a large commodity with over 300 brands and hundreds of producers and thousands of growers. The characteristics of each brand can vary greatly due to the plant, the processing, the stationing, the leaf cut, the stems, and when is was harvested.
A kilogram (2.2lbs) of yerba mate will sell on the store shelves of South America for less that 1 dollar due to government price controls. Organic yerba mate is produced mostly for export. The export prices of yerba mate are going up due to the exchange rates and increased demand but not enough to justify most of the high prices we see on the market today.
The best yerba mate to buy is one that is reasonably priced and that you enjoy drinking. The more you like it the more you will drink and the more you will benefit. Experiment to find the best brand and the best brewing technique.
